Having spent a year selling media space at Campaign Magazine in London, Neil began his career in advertising in 1989 when he joined Grey London as a young new business executive. Neil quickly moved on to the London office of U.S. based agency Griffin Bacal where he worked on their Hasbro Toys business. After one year at the company, at the age of 26, he was seconded to work in their New York headquarters where he was their first and only non-American employee!
What began as a two year adventure to the States, turned into a ten year career in New York. Neil notched up five years at one of the city’s pre-eminent hot shops, Weiss Whitten Stagliano, where he rose to be an owner/partner in the company. He also spent a further two and a half years as a Senior Partner at Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide; overseeing global strategy for the IBM software and Coca-Cola businesses.
Following repeated trips to Asia while at Ogilvy, Neil decided this was where the action was going to be and moved to Hong Kong in mid 2002. There, as Regional Head of Planning for the Bates network, he helped steer the agency and its clients through a turbulent takeover period while performing a leadership role in growing the Nokia business both in Asia and globally for WPP. After three years, Neil returned to work for his former O&M boss who had become global Chairman of Lowe Worldwide and spent two years at Lowe Asia as their Regional Chief Strategy Officer before leaving to set up his own consultancy; which he is still running today (joinusatliberty.com).
Since moving to Asia, Neil has worked extensively in almost every market in the region and spent time working and living in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore. His portfolio of experience in Asia is extensive and includes the following brands; APB, Audi, Bank of Singapore, BPW, Channel NewsAsia, Coca-Cola, Danone, Dell, Double Helix, Electrolux, Evian, FRANK, Garuda Indonesia, Heineken, HSBC, HTC, Johnson & Johnson, LG, Nokia, OCBC, Sun Life Financial and Unilever.
Neil is a regular speaker at INSEAD in Singapore, a frequent blogger/commentator for Campaign Magazine and the Chairman of the Account Planning Group (APG) in Singapore. Neil is a Hong Kong resident, living in Singapore with his wife – who also works in the communications industry.
